A Varam is actually a Tamil verse, praising the Lord in the form of His creation. Thevaram literally means "string of jewels". These verses are most often sung to the tune of Carnatic music. Varams are most often sung in praise of Lord Shiva, who has been given several different names throughout these varams. Thevaram is said to have been compiled by 'Arunagirinathar', a 7th-century Tamil saint. Tirumurukapadukkarunai TheriyumagaMeanings of the verses are often taken from the verses themselves.
